Search for Element

The Search for Element dialog is used to search for records on Elements of natural diversity. search criteria include Element name, ID, classification, location, and rank.

In all cases, the records listed in the Search Results section are Element Tracking records (global, national, or subnational, depending on the setting of the Results Filter section). However, in case 3, the record retrieved when the user selects an item from the Results list is the same as the type of record from which the Search for Element dialog was opened (e.g., an Element Management record is retrieved if the Find window is opened from an Element Management record). In case 3, the newly retrieved record does not open, but is copied into the original record.

All records that meet search criteria are displayed in the Search Results section, in the lower portion of the Search dialog.

Default Settings

The Search for Element dialog will open with the following default settings unless the user has chosen to Re-use criteria for next search, by indicating the corresponding checkbox. Unchecking the box will reset the window to its defaults.

* Name type may be specific when the Find window is opened from inside a detail window to link one record to another.

Sections in the Search for Element dialog:

ClosedResults Filter

The selection of one or more checkboxes on the right-hand side of the Search for Element window limits or broadens the results of an Element search.

The Global, National, and Subnational check boxes let the user specify which geographic level(s) of Element records the search will return (for example, only global records if only the Global box is checked). Note that the Results Filter DOES NOT determine which level of records is searched. That function is governed by the buttons in the Geographic Level group box on the Name and Rank sections, and only applies to searches by Rank or Name.

If the Include Inactive box is checked, inactive records Element record will be included in the pool of records searched and will be returned if they meet the search criteria.

Restrict to those that have EST limits the results to records (of every geographic level) which are linked to an Element Subnational Tracking (EST) record. If this is checked, records for which there is no corresponding EST record will not be displayed in the Search Results section.

ClosedName

The Name section utilizes general information on an Element name as search criteria.

Choose the option button that indicates whether the search should be limited to the global, national, or subnational Geographic Level, or should include all levels.

Element Name

Choose the option button that indicates whether the search should be limited to scientific names, common names, or both.

Comparison

Select the value that indicates how the Element name to be found compares with the search criteria entered in the associated Text to search for field. (Domain values for Comparison)

Text to search for

Enter characters to be used as search criteria for an Element name. Wildcard characters can be included.

 

If appropriate, select the checkbox that indicates whether related scientific names (synonyms for taxa, related concept names for communities) or other common names should be included in the search.
ClosedCode/ID

The Code/ID section uses identifiers as search criteria for an Element. The code or ID entered here overrides any criteria entered on other sections in the Search for Element window.

Choose the option button that indicates whether the ELCODE to be entered as search criteria is an exact match, or a partial match.

Text to search for

 Enter all, or some portion, of the ELCODE that has been used for the Element in the BCD.

Element ID

Enter the identifier for the Element.
ClosedClassification

The Classification section utilizes information on the Element classification as search criteria.

Task or Purpose

Name Type

Choose the option button that indicates whether the search should be limited to botanical, zoological, or ecological Name Types, or should include all types.

Classification Code

 
Comparison Select the value that indicates how the comparable field in the Element record to be found compares with the criteria entered in the associated Higher Taxonomy Code or Classification Code search field. (Domain values for Comparison)
  Enter a character string related to the Higher Taxonomy Code (for Elements with botanical or zoological Name Type) or Classification Code (for Elements with Ecological Name Type) to be used as search criteria. If all Name Types are indicated as search criteria above, this field is not labeled but allows entry of any character string as search criteria.

Classification Status

Select value from drop-down menu that indicates the Classification Status to be used as search criteria. Domain values: Standard, Nonstandard, Provisional.
ClosedLocation

The Location section uses information related to the location(s) of Element Occurrence(s) (EO[s]) as search criteria.

Location Select the value that indicates the Location of the associated Element.
ClosedStatus

The Status section utilizes conservation status rank information as search criteria for an Element.

Geographic Level

Choose the option button that indicates whether the search should be limited to the global, national, or subnational rank. Note that this selection determines whether the first option button in the Rank search criteria group box is global, national, or subnational rank.
Status Choose the option button that indicates whether the search should be limited to Global/National/Subnational Ranks (level of rank is determined by preceding Geographic Level entry), Exotic Status, BCD_Style Ranks, or Rounded Ranks.

Comparison

Select the value that indicates how the Element rank, Exotic Status, or BCD-Style Rank to be found compares with the text string entered in the associated Text to search for field. (Domain values for Comparison)

Text to search for

Enter characters to be used as search criteria for an Element rank. Wildcard characters can be included. Note that this field is unavailable if Rounded Rank is selected as search criteria.
If Rounded Rank is selected, select the checkbox(es) that indicate which Element Rank(s) should be utilized as search criteria.

Subnational EO Track Status

Select the value that indicates the EO Tracking status for the associated Element.
