Sub-EO

A smaller geographically distinct area contained within a principal Element Occurrence (EO) of the same Element (species or ecosystem) can be a sub-EO. A sub-EO is an EO created to track information that could be useful for conservation planning, monitoring, or management at local levels. A sub-EO should not be developed for a component patch of a multi-part (complex) EO representation unless significant information is to be tracked for the patch that would warrant the creation and maintenance of an EO record; if not, these components can be more simply tracked as Source Features.

Sub-EOs are most typically developed to track areas utilized by species for discrete behaviors or life history functions (e.g., feeding areas, dens, nest sites). Areas of differing composition, or higher density, quality, or conservation concern (e.g., demes or subpopulations, different age stands or successional phases, old growth patches, concentrated breeding areas) are also frequently tracked as sub-EOs.

Within the Map, a sub-EO is differentiated within the Details dialog by the Parent EO ID field and View Parent EO option within the Tasks menu.

Within the data record of a Sub-EO, the Parent EO is identified by the Parent EO ID (which is linked to the record for navigating directly to the Parent EO) within the Identifiers section.

Alternatively, navigate to the Parent EO from the Related Record Menu via the Element Occurrence option by choosing Parent EO.
